The Ups and Downs of a Mentored Turkey Hunt

Up at 4:30 AM, out the door by 5:00 AM, and in the blind before 5:30. Is this what turkey hunting is like? If so, I love it and I hate it all at the same time. We get to sit in these tiny stools, as still as possible, watching this field for the next 6 hours. And unfortunately, we didn’t bring enough coffee. But as soon as the sun came up, we started hearing gobbles in all directions, along with the chorus of songbirds. I start feeling like maybe this was going to happen.

The Sneak Bird

It was starting to feel like we were jinxed, or at least that our tactics were jinxed. We were almost an hour into our third set up of the morning, and aside from some very curious jakes that were eager to die (and for the better part of twenty minutes I was very, very tempted to oblige them) the mature toms had been cagey and spooky of our positions. The most recent bird had skirted wide of us after initially committing well, and I was questioning everything I knew about the pursuit of longbeards.
